About the Foundation

Vacant houses are not the end of a block. They can be the start of one.

Our Mission
“The mission of the Mending Walls Foundation is to provide housing for the homeless, veterans, and other at-risk citizens by rehabilitating and building homes in low-income areas.”

Mending Walls Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in Maryland. The foundation was created to address a problem visible on street after street in Baltimore: sound, well-built homes standing vacant and boarded up — while families and veterans nearby search for a safe, affordable place to live.

Our answer is straightforward. We acquire vacant and blighted properties, renovate them to a quality standard, and lease them as affordable rental homes for the people our mission names — homeless individuals, veterans, and other at-risk citizens — including families using Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers and veterans through the HUD-VASH program.

Every renovated house does two jobs at once: it puts a roof over a household that needs one, and it brings a neglected property — and the block around it — back to life.

  • ✓Maryland 501(c)(3). A registered nonprofit organization based in Maryland.
  • ✓Baltimore first. Renovation work begins in Baltimore, with expansion to Georgia and Florida planned for later.
  • ✓Housing, not speculation. Properties are renovated to be lived in — as long-term affordable rental homes.

Programs

Two paths home

Both programs serve the people at the center of our mission — homeless individuals, veterans, and other at-risk citizens. Each starts the same way, with a vacant property rehabilitated into a real home, and ends the same way: with someone home.

Program One

Affordable Rental Housing

We renovate vacant properties into safe, quality rental homes for families using Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers — stable housing for households, and dependable tenancy for neighborhoods.

  • Vacant and blighted homes fully renovated before move-in
  • Homes leased to Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) households
  • Safe, well-maintained properties held to a quality standard
Program Two

Veterans Housing — HUD-VASH

We provide renovated homes for veterans through HUD-VASH, the program that pairs HUD housing vouchers with VA support services — so veterans get both a home and the support that helps them keep it.

  • Homes prepared for veterans holding HUD-VASH vouchers
  • Housing that works alongside VA case management and services
  • A stable address as the foundation for rebuilding civilian life

Current focus: Baltimore, Maryland

Mending Walls is registered in Maryland, and Baltimore is where the work starts — a city with blocks of vacant rowhouses and a real need for quality affordable homes. Expansion to Georgia and Florida is planned as the foundation grows.

Work With Us
STEP 01

Acquire

We identify and acquire vacant or blighted properties in Baltimore neighborhoods — houses with good bones and no future as they stand.

STEP 02

Renovate

Each property is renovated into a safe, quality home — the kind of place any of us would be glad to live in, not the minimum a voucher allows.

STEP 03

House

The finished home is leased to a Section 8 family or a veteran through HUD-VASH — turning a boarded house back into an address, and a block back into a neighborhood.
